The GDC has raised some concerns over the quality of CPD which is available to dental care professionals. The GDC has expressed that CPD providers must ensure and establish quality.
Between October 2012 and January 2013 the GDC conducted a public consultation over the four month period. This was issued as part of the GDC’s CPD review and assessment. During the review period there were 387 responses.
These included feedback from registrants, postgraduate dental deaneries and professional organisations regarding CPD and its quality. 77.5% of respondents agreed with the introduction of annual mandatory CPD declarations, 87% agreed with maintaining a 5 year CPD cycle and 83% agreed with the proposed new minimum hours of CPD by professional groups.
The GDC have had some concerns over the quality of CPD and have addressed the issue by contacting providers directly. The GDC maintain that they are taking a robust approach to guarantee that CPD providers are providing products and services that are of an excellent caliber and ensuring that providers adhere to GDC rules and regulations. GDC have advised CPD providers to be aware that their services must meet industry-led standards.
Succeeding the CPD consultation a detailed statement was released which declared that the GDC is calling on all CPD providers to ensure all CPD products and services are of a robust quality. Feedback mechanisms must be put in place. The GDC is also calling on the dental CPD industry to be proactive and work together to deliver industry-led quality standards. The GDC is calling on all registrants as well, to remind them to make cautious decisions when purchasing CPD products and services, before investing time and money.
The GDC have guided registrants and CPD undertakers to make careful choices when choosing their CPD providers.
