GDC-NEWSFollowing concerns raised over the quality of CPD which is accessible and available to dental care professionals, the GDC has issued a call for further information involving the quality of CPD.

The GDC underwent research, involving a public consultation focusing on CPD review and assessment. The feedback and results of this research reflected that some CPD providers were not meeting the registrants’ expectations in terms of quality. Due to these revelations the GDC has decided to find out more about how CPD quality is being assured.

The GDC in April 2013, addressed all CPD providers to ensure they robustly maintain quality in their CPD products and services. They requested that CPD providers must make sure that feedback mechanisms are put into effect. They asked the dental CPD industry to be proactive in working together to achieve industry-led quality standards. They also issued a statement communicating with all registrants and consumers of CPD to be careful when making decisions on the CPD products and services before investing in time or money.

Requirements are issued by the GDC to make sure all verifiable CPD has quality controls implemented. This is mandatory for CPD providers. Registrants who complete their CPD must document the evidence of their CPD and also evidence of the quality controls which are put in place. It is a legal requirement that this documentation must be made available for the GDC if requested.

The GDC’s search for further information involves the following questions:

• What methods of quality control in CPD in dentistry are in place?
• What methods of quality control of CPD in dentistry do you believe are most effective at ensuring adequate quality provision?
• How assured or concerned are you about the adequacy of quality control of CPD?
• What experience do you have of the provision of verifiable CPD not being of adequate quality in your opinion?
What is your belief about the consequences of CPD that is of inadequate quality?

These questions are addressed to all dental care professionals. More information can be found at the GDC’s policy development pages.

The GDC are looking for written responses to the above questions questions which should be sent to:
