cpd clockThe CPD cycle end is fast approaching and dental nurses, as well as other dental care professionals need to be aware of this. The GDC is reminding all DCPs that by the 31st July 2013, 150 hours of CPD must have been completed. This gives dental nurses and other dental care professionals around five months before their five year cycle of CPD comes to an end. All DCPs registered with the GDC then have until the 28th August 2013 to provide evidence of the CPD hours which they have completed. It is vital that dental nurses and other dentistry professional adhere to these rules and deadlines otherwise they might face loosing their GDC registration.

CPD stands for continuing professional development and is a legal requirement. The GDC aims to provide support for registered GDC, dental professionals. The cycles are put in place so that registrants remain following the GDCs ‘Standards for dental professionals’ in their area of practice. This ensures that all DCP’s are providing high-quality care to their patients, as well as keeping up to date with dentistry education. ‘The GDC’s Standards for dental professionals’ asserts that dental professionals should continue to assess their relevant knowledge of practice, evaluate their skills, examine their performance and to maintain a high standard for all of of these CPD should be relevant to each individual’s scope of practice. If registrants are intending to develop their career further, CPD for this field and area of knowledge must be considered and carried out as well.

DCPs need to make sure that their CPD is verifiable. This is consistent with the law, which declares that quality control must be put in place by providers of CPD. Those who have paid for CPD which they are unhappy with should provide feedback to the source. Dental nurses can be motivated by the fact that completing lots of CPD has a great impact on the practice and also allows individuals to develop their career further.
