blog-questionYesterday I posed a question on Facebook:

“Good morning DN’s! I got an email this morning from a nurse saying she is not allowed to take days off during the week for courses. Is this the same for any of you?”

With over 86 posts and counting the conversation quickly turned to employment and pay.

So I want to pose this question to you.

Have you asked your boss for a pay rise? Now if the answer is yes, before you asked him/her,did you explain why they should give you one? If the answer was no, why not? What stopped you?

I asked all my previous employers for a pay rise because the truth is:If you do not ask, you do not get! (Fact)

I have spoken to hundreds of nurses who told me their boss wouldn’t give them a pay rise. When I asked them if they had asked for one, NOT ONE said yes…

Now before asking I would have made sure I proved that I was worthy of one by my actions and hard work. I would have carefully considered all the my responsibilities, extra responsibilities and why I was a valued member of the team.

I would then translate that to my employer. I never got denied a pay rise.

Now I won’t lie when I first started asking for pay rises it scared me and I was totally out of my comfort zone. It took me years to perfect the art!

Please remember, Dentists have a lot on their plate. As a business owner myself I can now see their side as well. They are not stupid (hopefully) and if you are well worth keeping and lets say, irreplaceable they will endeavour to keep you! I understand things are different in the NHS/Hospital.

Please do comment on your experience of taking the issue of pay directly to your employer..

Thanks for reading, have a great day!
