Heart your_smileThe launch of the Heart your Smile campaign has been the topic of many conversations in the dental industry. Revealed by Dr James Goolnik back in October 2011 at the BDTA Showcase, the purpose of the campaign is to change the perception of dentistry for the better and reinstate trust in the public again.

The manifesto for change involves ‘nine habits’ which dental professionals should learn:

  • Be confident… believe you can make the difference
  • Smile…it’s attractive and it’s free
  • Connect… join in, listen and understand
  • Innovate…challenge your boundaries
  • Excel…excellence is a journey, not a destination
  • Inspire…lead by example
  • Mentor…everyone benefits
  • Respect…treat every person as you wish to be treated yourself
  • Care…everyone’s health matters

The Heart your Smile campaign is not going to be using old and familiar methods of reaching out to the public, as Dr Goolnik points out, ‘doing what we have done before will just give us the same results.’ The aim is to use a different approach and try and connect with the public by using humour, powerful visuals and collective effort. Once the campaign has enough professional support, the public will be involved. Dr Goolnik estimates around 12 months until this development.

In order to make a huge impact on the public, the Heart your Smile campaign requires support from as many dental professionals as possible.

What do we need to do then?

Firstly, we need to be implementing the nine habits into our dental practice straight away. It is also encouraged that practices work with the local community and show acts of kindness to the public, as this will help start to change the public’s perception of the dental industry.
